Carl H. Van Winkle, 89, Morgantown
Carl H. Van Winkle age 89 passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, February 2, 2010 at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis. He was a resident of Morgantown.
Carl retired in 1980 as the owner and operator of the V & V Regal Store in Morgantown after 19 years of service. He worked at the store from 1946 until he purchased it in 1961. Prior to that, he worked at P.R. Mallory in Indianapolis in the Tool Crib.
Carl was a 1939 graduate of Mooresville High School and went on to study bookkeeping at Indianapolis Central Business College. After graduation he served as a Private with the United States Army during World War II from 1943 to 1945.
Carl was the 6th child of 10 siblings born September 13, 1920 in Marion County to the late George Robert & Lannah (Swickard) Van Winkle. He married his loving wife of 68 years Alice M. (Hickman) Van Winkle on September 21, 1941 in Martinsville. She survives.
He was a loving father to five sons: Bruce Van Winkle and his wife Jean, Wayne D. and his wife Judy, Keith E & Kevin L. and his wife Susannah all of Morgantown and Ross L. Van Winkle of Tonopah, NV; 11 grandchildren & 8 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Carl was preceded in death by four sisters: Isabel Van Hoy, Lodema Stout, Hilda Simpson and Mary Jo Van Winkle; five brothers: Cecil, Gail, Charles, Bill and Sylvain Van Winkle.
He was a 50 year member of the First Christian Church of Morgantown and a past member of the Morgantown Lions Club. Carl enjoyed working in his garden, walking his dog and playing euchre. He loved his family, the state of Indiana and traveling.
The Rev. James Brown will conduct a funeral service 10 am Saturday at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 4 to 8 on Friday and one hour prior to the funeral service on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.
