A Merry Christmas from Nineveh

NINEVEH, Ind. -  Merry Christmas From Cincinnati Street Coffee

Last Sunday I was sitting with the kids and grandkids around the table looking at store flyers from the newspaper. It suddenly hit me and I said, “You know, six months ago we weren’t wanting these things, so why do we want everything now, just because the stores and TV commercials put pictures in front of us? Whose birthday is it, anyway?”

Gift-giving at Christmas started innocently, with gifts from the heart representing the gifts of the magi to Baby Jesus. One of my favorite Christmas stories is “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry. A Victorian wife sells her beautiful long hair to buy a chain for her husband’s heirloom watch, and he sells his watch to buy combs for her hair. How bittersweet, and what sacrifice! Saint Nicholas inherited wealth from his parents, but spent it all to help the suffering, poor and sick. Somehow the Santa factor today puts the focus on ourselves and what we want. It’s strange that it is totally opposite of what Jesus is all about: Loving and serving others. If we are to honor Jesus on his birthday, what do you suppose he would want from us as a gift? I’m praying he will show me in the coming week.

Area churches have special services and events coming up. The Crossing, a new church south of Nineveh just before the entrance to Prince’s Lakes, is showing “The Nativity Story” Sunday beginning with a soup supper at 5:30 p.m. The movie is a big-screen production of the first Christmas that was released a few years ago. What a great way to get focused and start the week’s celebration. On Christmas Eve, Nineveh Christian Church welcomes everyone for a candlelight service at 6:30 p.m.

The coffee shop will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and on Jan. 1. Gift certificates are available. Other gift ideas on hand are cookbooks from Church of the Lakes and ”Earlier Times in Nineveh Township” for history buffs. Don’t forget the honey for those holiday recipes.

This Christmas we cherish your friendship and wish you the stillness and peace of a silent night – a time to reflect on your blessings and await the coming of the Savior of the world.
