Franklin, Ind – Leadership in Franklin is seeking input from community members on how the city can best provide services to its aging population. “Now that we’ve got our police department sorted and our fire stations under construction, we need to be looking at other ways we can improve our community,” said Mayor Fred Paris. “With the large aging population here in Franklin, it just makes sense to start thinking about how we can serve that community, and look into what kinds of programming and services they want and need.”

The city currently operates the Franklin Senior Center, located on East Adams Street. The Senior Center offers programs ranging from bingo and card games to day trips and special events. The current facility is housed in a portion of the old Payne School.

According to Chip Orner, superintendent of Franklin’s parks and recreation department, the limited space for activities make identifying opportunities to expand programming for the active adult population very important. “As our adult population continues to age and grow, it becomes increasingly important for us to offer high quality programming to this segment of the community,” said Orner. “Providing opportunities for our active adult population to stay healthy and on the go is vital to maintaining the high quality of life our community is known for.”

Members of the community interested in serving on the volunteer study committee should contact the mayor’s office at 736-3602.
